The cricket world lost yet another gem when Australia’s former cricketer Andrew Symonds tragically died in a car crash. He was 46. The all-rounder’s death was confirmed by Cricket Australia, which cited a police statement with details about the accident which occurred outside Townsville in Queensland state. The emergency services reportedly attempted to revive the driver and sole occupant, but he succumbed to injuries after the car left the road and rolled. His fatal crash comes just months after the deaths of fellow cricketing giants Shane Warne and Rod Marsh. Symonds was popularly known as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time, who played 26 tests, 198 one-day internationals and 14 Twenty20 internationals between 1998 and 2009. He is among the few selected players on one-day internationals to score above 5000 runs (5,088) and take more than 100 wickets (133). With Australia, Symonds enjoyed two successive invincible runs in ODI World Cups— 2003 and 2007. During the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, the Australian cricketer became the second-most expensive cricketer in the auction, fetching $1.35 million. He was picked by Deccan Chargers in the auction. In his final IPL season in 2011, Symonds represented Mumbai Indians.
