Smiling Dick Campbell reckons he won’t win Manager of the Year because “East coast boys don’t win championships.”
But the Arbroath boss couldn’t care less as he gets set to lead the Lichties into the Premiership playoffs.
Campbell’s team have been one of the stories of the season in the Championship as they embarked on a fairytale promotion charge.
They led the division for spells and took Kilmarnock the distance – only yielding the title on the penultimate game of the season by losing to Derek McInnes’ team.
They bounced back from that with a 3-0 win over Morton in a carnival atmosphere at Gayfield as a 3,000-strong home support celebrated the best season in the part-timers’ history.
And it could get even better yet as they’ll take on either Inverness or Partick Thistle – hoping to set up a playoff final with a Premiership team.
Campbell’s heroics have earned him a nomination for the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award – alongside Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou, Ross County’s Malky Mckay and Cove Rangers’ Paul Hartley.
But he reckons he’s not got a chance as he’s seen it all before.
He told BBC Scotland’s Kenny McIntyre: “I don’t think about it, I’ve been quoted before and I’ve been nominated before.
“East coast boys don’t win championships, son.
“I don’t know anything about it, no-one’s told me anything, so I’m not sitting here worrying about a manager of the year award.”
