St Mirren will be introducing VAR technology to the SMISA Stadium midway through next season after a vote at the SPFL AGM.

All 12 top-flight clubs have given the green light to the rollout, which could come after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar this winter.

The Video Assistant Referee tech has been used to give referees a second opportunity to view game changing incidents for a second time and has been used in European competition since the 2019/20 season.

Following the decision, Neil Doncaster, chief executive of the SPFL, said: “I’m very pleased that we received the necessary 75 per cent votes in the cinch Premiership, the cinch Championship, and cinch Leagues 1 and 2, which enable us to forge ahead with VAR technology next season.”

The introduction VAR is expected to coast around £1.2million per season in total.

The share of the payments will be proportional to a team’s position in the division with clubs at the top of the league paying out more than those at the bottom.

The Premiership winners will pay approximately £195k per season, with a sliding scale down to the 12th club, which will pay around £67k.
