The poll of 2,000 signed up citizens discovered that many are uninformed or mistaken about the arguments the Supreme Court heard recently on Mississippis 15-week abortion restriction– the case the court is using to review and potentially overturn the defenses for the treatment preserved by Roe v. Wade since 1973.
The survey discovered 44 percent of those surveyed stated they had actually heard “very little” or “absolutely nothing at all” about the case, while nearly two-thirds either stated they didnt understand how likely the court was to overturn Roe or said the court isnt most likely to reverse the precedent.
The courts 6-3 conservative supermajority made it clear during oral arguments on Dec. 1 that its eager to roll back abortion rights, with the only impressive question being how far the justices will want to go.
The bulk of respondents to the survey assistance abortion rights and do not favor the kind of sweeping limitations a Supreme Court ruling for Mississippi would introduce, though the general public remains divided on the question.
A total of 52 percent of participants stated abortion must stay legal in most or all cases, compared to 36 percent who stated it must be prohibited in many or all cases. And 45 percent said Roe must not be reversed, compared to 24 percent who said it ought to be.
The POLITICO/Morning Consult survey was carried out after the arguments on the Mississippi case, from Dec. 4 to 6, 2021, and surveyed 2,000 registered citizens. The margin of mistake is plus or minus 2 portion points.
