Former President Donald Trump is teaming up with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the 2024 presidential campaign – to trim the fat.
In August, Kennedy abandoned his quixotic presidential campaign to support Trump. Today, in the twilight of the countryside, this cool duo takes on the battle against junk food and unhealthy eating on the trails.
Kennedy dubbed this crusade “Make America Healthy Again,” also known as MAHA. He says he’s working with the Trump campaign to evangelize the cause.
“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that he has deepened his partnership with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump,” The Washington Post reported last week. “He gestured to his green ‘Make America Healthy Again’ hat, a new and visible blend of his environmental policies and Trump’s conservative brand.”
“We will once again become the healthiest nation in the world,” Kennedy promised. “That’s what we mean by MAHA.”
The Fat Nag is intrigued. Nag, your humble servant, has been campaigning for decades to fight obesity and reduce our waistlines in order to save lives. My alter ego lectured, begged, and pleaded with my friends, family, and readers to throw out the Cheetos, Ding Dongs, and Sprites and shed the fat.
The MAHA package calls for, among other things, an overhaul of federal regulations governing food and pharmaceuticals, an overhaul of farm subsidies and a restructuring of public health agencies, the Post reported. The Trump-Kennedy duo’s “still-developing plan,” according to the newspaper, “exploits broad frustrations with the U.S. health care system and its problems — such as the country’s reliance on ultra-foods.” transformed, the rise of chronic diseases and the decline of the United States. life expectancy – which Democrats barely talk about and which Trump previously ignored as well.”
The Nag should be delighted that the man who could be our next president is religious about the country’s long-standing health crisis, which has become more serious than ever, thanks to the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We suffer from a long-standing obesity epidemic. About 42 percent of Americans are obese, an increase of nearly 10 percent from the previous decade, according to data from the American Heart Association. Obesity in children and adults increases the risk of many health problems, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Well-intentioned efforts to tackle the disease were launched with much promise, only to crash and burn. I applauded the fights to defeat the scourge of obesity, such as then-first lady Michelle Obama’s White House campaign, “Let’s Move! » ; then-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ill-fated proposals to reduce the use of trans fats and sodium in restaurants; and Cook County Board Chairman Toni Preckwinkle’s despised “soda tax,” which was repealed.
It was all a losing battle. America is bigger than ever.
Now comes MAHA. The Nag welcomes everyone to the fight against fat, but forgive him for being a little skeptical of this effort, especially given the source.
The healthy eating cause is the right message, but Trump is not the right messenger. He is the ultimate example of poor nutrition. Look at him. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump tweeted a photo of himself sitting on his plane, ready to dig into a bucket full of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
