USA Volleyball names Kiraly men's coach through '28 Olympics

Karch Kiraly, a three-time Olympic champion, was named coach of the men’s national team through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games on Thursday by USA Volleyball.

Kiraly, who has coached the U.S. women’s team since 2012, will fill the position held for the past 12 years by John Speraw, who was named president of USA Volleyball on Oct. 1.

Named the greatest player of the 20th century by the International Volleyball Federation, Kiraly was a key player on the 1984 and 1988 U.S. men’s Olympic gold medal teams and won gold in beach volleyball in 1996.

As the U.S. women’s coach, he guided the Americans to Olympic gold in Tokyo, bronze in Rio and silver this year in Paris.

“For a quarter of my life, I devoted everything I had to the U.S. women’s team,” Kiraly said. “Now is the time for new adventures and new challenges.”

The American men won bronze at the Paris Olympics and are ranked third in the world.

“I am thrilled beyond words to have the opportunity to coach the United States Men’s National Team,” Kiraly said. “I observed with respect and admiration all members of the program who strived for excellence, both in training and in competition.”

Kiraly, 63, coached the Americans to a 327-81 record, including three Volleyball Nations League trophies.

“I’m thrilled that Team USA’s biggest winner will leave the U.S. women’s team to lead the U.S. men’s team at Los Angeles 2028,” Speraw said.

“I think it’s fitting that when Karch takes the field at the Los Angeles Olympics, he will compete once again with the men’s team.

“I have complete confidence in Karch’s process. He has a relentless work ethic, a brilliant intellect and is a selfless teacher.”
