For the first time, if you want to visit the best bar in the world, you will have to go to Mexico.
Mexico‘s Handshake Speakeasy has been crowned the best cocktail bar on the planet by the World’s 50 Best Bars. Overseen by bar director Eric van Beek, the bar is the first-ever in Mexico to take the top spot on the annual list, now in its 16th year. The full rankings were announced Tuesday evening during a ceremony in Madrid.
“Being the first ever Mexican No. 1 is an exceptional achievement, one that Eric van Beek and his team greatly deserve,” Emma Sleight, head of content for World’s 50 Best Bars, said in a statement. “The bar’s impressive rise to the World’s 50 Best Bars list over the years is testament to their unique combination of flawless hospitality, innovative technique and excellent quality. cocktails.”
As Handshake Speakeasy fell from third place last year16 bars appeared in the top 50 for the first time. The highest new entry is Bar Leone from Hong Kong, which joined the list as an impressive No. 2. Only two bars completely disappeared from the ranking, without even being demoted to rank list of finalists from numbers 50 to 100: Sago House, ranked No. 32 last year, and Galaxy Bar, No. 50.
A handful of cities each saw four standout places this year: London, New York and Singapore. In the British capital, the highest-ranked bar is Tayēr + Elementary, at #4. In the Big Apple, Double Chicken Please takes the lead at No. 14 (up from No. 2 last year). And Jigger & Pony from Singapore ranks 5th. Last year’s highest climber, meanwhile, was Cambridge Public House in Paris, which rose from 38th to 19th.
The World’s 50 Best list is voted on by more than 700 beverage industry experts, including bartenders, consultants, writers and cocktail specialists. This year, this voting body has decided that there may be no better drinks than those served at Handshake Speakeasy.
