Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Netanyahu said in a statement Tuesday that trust between the two men had evaporated during Israel’s war on Gaza.
“Over the past few months, this trust has eroded,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “In light of this, I have decided today to terminate the mandate of the Minister of Defense.”
“In the middle of a war, more than ever, complete trust is required between the prime minister and the defense minister,” Netanyahu said.
“Significant gaps were discovered between me and Gallant in the management of the campaign” in Gaza, Netanyahu said. Despite “many attempts to close these gaps,” the prime minister said, “they have continued to widen.”
Netanyahu named Foreign Minister Israel Katz to replace Gallant.
