European Parliament President Roberta Metsola met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi on Thursday to discuss the main issues facing Europe.

During his intervention on RaiUno, Metsola spoke at length about the topics discussed between the two main political leaders – from the Italian government choice for the European Commission Raphaele Fitto to the management of migratory flows.

“I am the president of the entire European Parliament,” Metsola said, “I would like to work with the proactive forces to give answers to citizens, to farmers, to industry. In the spirit in which the EU was built by De Gasperi, by Spinelli. It is in this spirit that we must find the majority of those who build and not those who destroy.

Metsola on Fitto appointments

“I have known Fitto for a long time and I am convinced that he will do an excellent job as commissioner. There will be a hearing of all the commissioners and what matters is competence: giving an opinion vice-presidency in Italy is an important step, given that we are talking about a founding country”, declared the President of the European Parliament.

“On immigration, we must move forward together”

Metsola’s intention was clear: immigration solutions must be found. She also explained that no country – neither Malta nor Italy – should feel alone, because managing migration flows is “a European challenge”.

Metsola also relaunched the pact on immigration and asylum voted last April in Brussels.

“We also voted for it with the help of our Italian colleagues. It contains innovative solutions after decades of blockade, because it protects external borders, shows firmness towards those who cannot be identified, guarantees repatriation safe and fast and stands strong against traffickers: we must always keep in mind that we are talking about human beings and not numbers.”

Middle East and de-escalation

The President of the European Parliament also stressed the importance for the EU to continue to “call for de-escalation, to denounce the role of Iran, to call for the release of the hostages and to continue our humanitarian aid.”

Regarding anti-Semitism, Metsola stressed: “If you are anti-Semitic, you are against Europe. It is very important for us to learn lessons from the past in order to be prepared to face the present and the future, including this one. The situation in the Middle East is a catastrophe. »
