John Metchie III, who missed his rookie season due to leukemia, scores his first career TD

Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III’s return to football has been a great story. Sunday night was just a nice bonus.

Before Metchie’s rookie season in 2022, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Metchie said he thought he I might not come back to play football. He underwent treatment, recovered and was back for the Texans last season.

Metchie had a slow freshman season, throwing for 158 yards. He didn’t score a touchdown and hasn’t scored one for nine weeks this season.

He got his first NFL touchdown Sunday night. All first touchdowns are special, but this one had to have a little extra meaning for Metchie considering what he had been through.

Metchie was asked to play a larger role in the offense with Nico Collins out with a hamstring injury and Stefon Diggs finished the season with a knee injury. His touchdown was important for the Texans, as it gave them a 23-7 lead just before halftime.

But this particular score was more important than what it meant on the Houston scoreboard.
