Indian airlines and airports received a total of 999 fake bomb threats from the beginning of this year until November 14, almost ten times more than in the whole of 2023, the country’s Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation told Parliament on Thursday.
The threats to domestic and international flights came primarily from social media, disrupting travel in the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, and all turned out to be false alarms.
“The recent threats were hoaxes and no real threat was detected at any of the airports/aircraft in India,” Minister Murlidhar Mohol told Parliament in a written response.
More than 500 bomb threats were issued in the last two weeks of October alone – a higher figure than for the rest of the year combined – he said. 12 people were arrested in relation to the 256 complaints filed against the police for such threats until November 14.
