How to Have the Best Sunday in Los Angeles, According to Sophie Thatcher

Sophie Thatcher is not in Los Angeles at the moment – but ‘Yellow Vest’ fans will appreciate why. She’s in Vancouver to film the new season of the hit Showtime series, in which Thatcher’s character, Natalie, was revealed last season as the leader of a football team abandoned deep in a mystical wilderness after their plane crashed on their way to a tournament. “I think this season will be very satisfying for viewers,” Thatcher said.

In Sunday Funday, Los Angeles residents give us a glimpse of their ideal Sunday in the city. Find ideas and inspiration on where to go, what to eat and how to enjoy life on the weekend.

She is also gearing up for two major film releases. On Nov. 8, she stars in the new A24 theological thriller “Heretic,” playing a Mormon missionary trapped in a game of cat and mouse with Hugh Grant. It’s a role she was born to play: Thatcher was raised Mormon in Illinois, and although she no longer practices, members of both sides of her family are still in the church. “I was a little scared because I didn’t want my mother to be judged for still going to church,” she said. “His church is very liberal, so they are hopefully open-minded. But it was scary and strange to do that. She also plays a lead role in the upcoming thriller “Companion.”

And she is also busy making music. Thatcher has just released “Pivot & Scrape,” a five-song debut EP of emotional ballads that showcases her deep, resonant voice and penchant for cathartic pop-rock arrangements.

With so much going on, Thatcher takes her free time seriously and spends it in her favorite Los Angeles neighborhoods. These include his old neighborhood of Silver Lake, his new neighborhood of Nichols Canyon (“We’re isolated, but we have this beautiful mid-century cabin-type neighborhood. It’s ideal”) or the hometown of her musician boyfriend Austin Feinstein, Sherman Oaks. Here’s how she would spend her ideal day.

This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for length and clarity.

10:30 a.m.: Wake up late and scroll
I like my sleep. I’m a good sleeper. 10:30 a.m. wake up. Roll. I’m working on this. I know it’s not the healthiest thing in the world, but I’m aware of it. The first step is to be aware of it. I deleted TikTok. I’m anti-TikTok because I would lose a good six or seven hours. It was bad. Now I only have Reels (Instagram). Then feed my cat, Gigi, of course.

11:00 a.m.: Head out for breakfast and a cannabis candy
I will bring my boyfriend Toast. I always get the smoked salmon toast and it’s so good. And a cold brew. Then I go to the weed store (MOTA) opposite Tartine. I get Camino Gummies, cherry flavored. Sometimes I take half. One is only five milligrams, but just a little something. I don’t drive, so throughout the day I just give my boyfriend orders; he leads me.

11:40 a.m.: Browse the antique mall for vintage earrings
My boyfriend is from Sherman Oaks. So when I got to Los Angeles, he showed me a lot of Sherman Oaks. I thought, “This is very charming and not at all what I expected.” ” Because, you know, you hear the valley… I’ll be slightly off the Camino candy in the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall: it’s endless and there are so many. It’s a bit overwhelming. I am an antique collector. Maybe I’ll find some earrings there, maybe a record or a new work of art. Many of the items on my walls come from the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall. The last record I got there was a weird record for a Scandinavian children’s choir, and then I listened to it and it made me really anxious. It was too dark.

12:40 p.m.: Grab some sushi and mate
There is a Bristol Farms near my home in West Hollywood. I’m going to get a mate there to cheer me up. I’m obsessed with energy drinks. Sometimes coffee isn’t enough. I feel like I’m almost immune to coffee now, so I’ll have an energy drink there. I’ll get some sushi there. Their sushi is really good. And I get a Chomps beef stick, because I need the protein.

1:30 p.m.: Industrial record shop
If I want to get more records or books there is this place called Analog mount in Silver Lake, it’s really sick. It has my favorite records, my favorite books and it’s a very specialized collection. They also have some really cool movie posters. If I want to have a more industrial record, I will go towards Analog mount. The owner (Mahssa Taghinia) and I have a lot of mutual insurance. I want to meet her, because she seems very cool.

3:00 p.m.: Have tea at the Jurassic Technology Museum

I’m driving around LA and Austin, my boyfriend, is driving, and I have the aux. We are going to go to Jurassic Technology Museumand I’m hoping to get a discount because my friend Emma works there. I’ll take another half of the Camino to the Jurassic Technology Museum, then stay on the balcony (on the roof of the Russian Tea Room) for a while, have some tea and chat. I feel like a good two hours is solid for the museum.

5:00 p.m.: Have an early dinner in the valley

We’re going to have an early dinner. There is a Little Three in Sherman Oaks, and it’s my favorite Austin venue. I’m going to have some onion soup and a glass of pinot noir, and my boyfriend and I are going to talk, hang out. We will be there for a good hour and a half. Usually I struggle with wanting to take a nap because I’ve had so many, but I’m not going to take a nap.

6:30 p.m.: Meet at the music studio
We’re going to go home and I’m going to work on the music, and then I’m going to get frustrated and stop working on the music unless it goes well, but there’s a 50/50 chance it won’t. . I can’t force it.

9:30 p.m.: Watch TV in bed (and scroll some more)
Austin is going to sleep with our cat, Gigi. If for some reason Austin isn’t in town, I watch “Bojack” to fall asleep, and I think I’ve seen every episode 30 times. It’s my favorite bedtime show, which is really depressing. It’s my comfort show, and it makes me feel better about myself. If we’re together, we watch “Sopranos.” I’ll scroll down and look. I can’t just look at something. I have to scroll. I go on Depop and I’ll look through my “suggested for you”, and I’ll buy clothes that I don’t need, and that usually don’t fit me. I’m still on Tumblr. I find some really good art on Tumblr and use it for a lot of references. I will also scroll through Instagram Reels. My algorithm is really funny right now on my finsta. They’re just monkeys. I have a very public love for orangutans. I have three stuffed animals that I take everywhere, and they’re all monkeys. At this point it’s been a long day and I’m falling asleep.
