Food waste isn't just a Thanksgiving problem. Lawmakers must act

To the editor: Besides fueling climate change, how about exacerbating drought? A lot of water has gone into growing the food that Americans throw away after Thanksgiving. (“Americans will throw away 316 million pounds of food this Thanksgiving. Here’s How It Fuels Climate Change», November 26)

When it comes to food waste, our lawmakers should address the millions of pounds of food thrown away by supermarkets. The produce and meat displays are constantly kept impeccable; anything that doesn’t look pretty is usually thrown away. The less food we need to grow, the less water we use to grow it.

And what about airlines that serve meals? Extra meals are provided on flights and discarded after landing. Whether you like it or not, a buttery bun is offered. The cows that provide the milk for this butter are a major source of methane emissions.
