Chris Wallace, CNN anchor said It would be a “miracle” if Kamala Harris won, given the results of the network’s early exit polls, which found a high level of voter dissatisfaction with the country’s trajectory under the administration Biden.
Ahead of an exit discussion on the election, CNN political director David Chalian revealed that only 7 percent of voters were enthusiastic about the way things are going in the United States, while 43 percent said they were dissatisfied and 29 percent expressed anger. Fifty-eight percent of respondents disapprove of Biden’s performance as president.
CNN anchor Dana Bash suggested it was unclear which candidate, Donald Trump or the vice president, would bear more responsibility in the eyes of disaffected voters.
“Harris is part of the current administration,” she said, “but Donald Trump and the Trump era are upon us.”
Wallace chimed in and said he thought that take “put the best spin” on Harris.
Of the abysmal satisfaction figures, Wallace said: “I think it’s due to the current conditions in the country. I mean, in conventional terms, it would be a miracle that Kamala Harris could win with that kind of headwind.
“If she is able to overcome these numbers and still win this election, then she has done a remarkable job of separating herself one way or another: she is part of the solution, not the problem,” Wallace added.
CNN host Audie Cornish, responding to Wallace, was less ready to conclude that the exit poll results boded ill for Harris, saying it was “still early in the night” to predict that what these results could mean for candidates.
In the days leading up to the election, Harris’ team would have searched to distance the vice president’s image from Biden — as well as his low approval ratings and penchant for gaffes — even as he tried to campaign on his behalf.
Whether voters associate their dislike of Biden’s presidency with Harris will become clearer as Election Day moves into the evening, polls begin to close and the first votes are counted.
