Amazon Goose Island Fulfillment Center Closes

Amazon is closing its Goose Island fulfillment center in River North and laying off 211 employees, the company announced in a state filing Monday.

The company will help affected employees find new positions “within Amazon, including at nearby operations,” Amazon spokesman Sam Stephenson said in a statement Friday.

“We are continually evaluating our network to ensure it meets our business needs and to enhance the experience of our employees, customers and partners,” Stephenson said. “As part of that effort, we have decided not to renew the lease for this Chicago, Illinois facility.”

Amazon announced it is closing its 1111 N. Cherry Ave. facility in accordance with Illinois’ Worker Layoff and Retraining Notification Act, which requires companies to provide two months’ notice of certain mass layoffs and plant closings. The company said customers will not be affected by the closure.

The facility opened in 2015 and was one of the first within the city limits, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. ”)

The company will begin laying off employees on Nov. 13, according to the state filing.

The news follows that of Amazon opening of a delivery center in October last year, after months of protests, in West Humboldt Park.
