A simple change in the way new lithium-ion batteries are charged can increase their total lifespan by 50% on average – and battery manufacturers around the world can immediately put this discovery into practice. Extended battery life could be particularly crucial to improving electric vehicles and energy storage for electrical networks.
“The cool thing is we didn’t change any of the battery chemistry,” says William Chueh at Stanford University in California. “We just modified this final manufacturing step to form the battery a little differently.”
