San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was hospitalized due to fluid in his lungs, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday afternoon.
It is not known how long he will be out, or if he will be able to participate in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Shanahan said Samuel began experiencing symptoms Sunday morning and had trouble breathing for their 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Samuel was removed from the game in the second quarter and did not return. He was then admitted to a local hospital that night.

Samuel has rushed for 335 yards and a touchdown on 20 catches this season, his sixth with the 49ers. He failed to make the catch and was not targeted during Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium. He was also seen on the sidelines during this competition wearing an oxygen mask, then returned to the field in street clothes in the second half.
He was questionable before the game due to illness, but details were not known.
Samuel’s illness is the latest blow to the 49ers’ offense this season. Another wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk tore his MCL and ACL in Sunday’s lossas well, and he is expected to undergo season-ending surgery in the near future. Aiyuk’s knee buckled awkwardly after making a catch at midfield, and he had to be sent off just before halftime.
Alongside the two wide receivers, running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to play this season due to calf and Achilles injuries. Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made his debut Sunday after missing the first six games of the season after being shot in the chest.
The 49ers dropped to 3-4 on the season after Sunday’s loss. They will host the Cowboys next Sunday night.
