Jewellery idea that could be used to detect spiked drinks designed by budding Ayrshire entrepreneur students

Budding entrepreneurs have coined in cash for their schools with ingenious inventions in an Ayrshire wide business contest.

Schools across the three Ayrshire councils took part in the Sir Tom Hunter Challenge Final, with pupils presenting their business plans in the Dragons’ Den style contest to a panel of judges.

Teams representing Ayr Academy, Belmont Academy, Grange Academy, St Joseph’s Academy and Garnock Community Campus presented their business plans to Sir Tom Hunter, Gordon Rennie from Gro Coffee and Fiona McKenzie from Centrestage, Kilmarnock, where the event was held.

South Ayrshire’s Belmont Academy scooped the top spot with team Heart Hues’ business idea for jewellery that could be used to detect if a drink had been spiked.

Heart Hues’ final product ‘Drink Jewel’ was a locket that had detachable strips that would be used to detect spiking.

There is also a code that allows users access to an app with information on what to do should they receive a positive result.

The team- made up of Sarra, Grace, Violet, Shannon, Sara, Evie and Daisy — won £5,000 for the school.

“We feel like it has opened up many opportunities for us and something really good for us to reflect on in years to come.”

Taking second place was Grange Academy with their food waste app, Unwasteful.

The app would allow users to track the use by or best before dates of purchased food, helping to stop ‘forgotten food’ in cupboards, fridges and freezers being binned.

This in turn would reduce food waste and provide economic benefits to local families.

Gro Coffee’s Gordon Rennie was really impressed with Unwasteful, adding that it could be very beneficial within a commercial setting to help food businesses better manage their stock and be more profitable.

The S4 team of Khulood, Emma and Heather, won £3,000 for their school.
