Gini Wijnaldum explains what Adrian must do after Liverpool keeper’s Southampton blunder

Adrian’s reaction to his Southampton blunder will be more important than the fact he gifted Danny Ings a late goal, according to Liverpool team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum .

The Super Cup penalty shoot-out hero of Istanbul last week turned villain at St Mary’s on Saturday as Adrian’s attempt to pass out of the back handed Saints a late lifeline in only his second Liverpool start.

Defender Andy Robertso n described the goal as “daft” – and former Liverpool striker Ings then missed a great chance to equalise three minutes later.

But Dutch midfielder Wijnaldnum said: “Those kind of things can happen with a goalkeeper. Last season it happened to Alisson against Leicester City. And in a pre-season friendly.

“How is he going to react to the mistake? I think that is more important than the mistake itself. Everyone can make a mistake, also a goalkeeper. But the only thing is, he is a goalkeeper, and if he make a mistake, a lot of times, it will result in a goal.

Liverpool keeper Adrian gifted Southampton a way back into the game

“Everyone needs time to adjust. He is just in for, not even two weeks, so we have to get used to each other.

“It would have been easier if he had come in from the start with Simon (Mignolet) leaving and him coming in.

“Now we just have to take the time that we have and train with each other and get to know each other better because everyone needs time to settle in.

Alisson made a similar error against Leicester early in his Liverpool career

“I had it also when I came here, I think all of the signings had it when they signed for Liverpool. So he will be okay.”

Manager Jurgen Klopp claimed he had “no problem” with Adrian’s error given the result.

And he revealed he told Adrian it must be a “goalie thing at Liverpool” having been reminded of a similar error by Alisson last season against Leicester early in his Reds career.

“I said ‘you’ve finally arrived!’,” Klopp said.

“Ali did the same, it’s obviously a goalie thing at Liverpool.

“He made a mistake, no problem with that as long as we win the games.”
