Donald Trump dedicated a total of two minutes of his day paying respects to former President George H.W. Bush, who continued to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Monday.
As PoliticusUSA’s Sarah Jones noted on Twitter a short time ago, citing the White House press pool, “POTUS and FLOTUS entered the Capitol rotunda at 8:30pm to pay their respects to HW” and they exited at 8:32 p.m.
Essentially, Trump spent more time walking back to his car than he spent inside the rotunda mourning the death of the 41st president.
Trump and Melania paid their respects to George H W Bush for… two minutes.
“POTUS and FLOTUS entered the Capitol rotunda at 8:30pm to pay their respects to HW…
At 8:32pm, they turned and exited the rotunda. Neither POTUS nor FLOTUS spoke,” per WH pool.

Trump has no interest in carrying out the symbolic duties of the presidency
If you put Trump’s abbreviated trip to “pay his respects” to the 41st president in context, it looks even worse.
After all, this is a president who devotes an absurd amount of his day throwing tantrums on Twitter and ingesting unhealthy amounts of Fox News propaganda – also known as “executive time.” Often, these activities make up his full schedule on a given day.
But when it comes to carrying out the important symbolic duties of the presidency, like honoring members of the military on Veterans Day or mourning a former President of the United States, he either refuses to do it or pulls off some half-assed effort.
His hollow visit to the Capitol on Monday night was just the latest demonstration of just how little respect he has for the office he holds.
